In the 16ᵉ and 17ᵉ centuries, the de Pontac family, influential in Guyenne,
held key positions, including mayor of Bordeaux and bishop of Bazas. Count
Jacques de Pontac owned several estates, including the famous Haut-Brion,
then called Pontac Haut-Brion. In 1885, Domaine de Pontac became Château Pontac Monplaisir. After the French Revolution, the estate was divided
up. In 1920, Auguste Maufrais bought it. Neglected during the 1940 war, it
was renovated in 1955 by Jean Maufrais. Today, Athanase Fakorellis is responsible for the vinification, which was overseen by the oenologist Émile
Peynaud. Since the 1980s, Jean’s son has carried on the family tradition
with a vinification worthy of the Grands Crus Classés.
